Window Farms are easy green ways to get into hydroponics on a shoeshtring. Don’t let that light go to waste. Grow your own.
Me first installing my first windowfarm in October 2011. I ordered a kit from Windowfarms.org. The kit took about two days worth of work to assemble. The hardest part was collecting the eight water bottles I needed. They had to be a specific brand and size ( Ice Mountian 1.75L ). Later I will install a lighting system using 4 CFLs. The website at Windowfarms.org was really helpful and the installation instructions were a huge help.
Even Anime is into hydroponics! Come on guys … bring Epcot home and grow food of the future!

The Solar greenhouse is starting a new hydroponic plant. Our last adventure yielded us one tomato fruit on one plant. We will now be starting a lettuce plant. Part of the problem with the tomato was the fact that it had to be manually pollinated, which did not go very well. A letttuce plant does not need to be pollinated, but will grow on by itself. In a few weeks the lettuce will will gain height and we will be able to pick the first of the leaves.
The hydroponic set up includes a 5 gal. bucket, that is all black. If light is allowed to enter the bucket, algae will grow. One of the keys to hydroponic growing is complete darkness. Healthy roots should be as white as paper. To keep the water moving and oxygen flowing, a fishtank pump was added to the set-up. The plant rests in a net pot at the top of the container, which is filled with clay balls. Every week the water is changed and the liquid fertilizer changed.
There is a lot of confusion about what hydroponic manure precisely are, particularly since folk have a tendency to confuse them with organic fertilizers. Hydroponics is the term given to the process of growing plants without soil. It is becoming increasingly popular because it’s a neat method to get a fantastic yield from plants without up lots of space. However , these gardens need a special sort of manure to get the best results. Hydroponic manure are similar to regular and organic fertilizers in the sense that they contain nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium which are the three major nutrient elements….

Just what hydroponics? To put it simply, it requires growing plants in a liquefied nutrient solution, instead of in soil. As a kid, I recall watching the Sci-fi series “Space 1999” and hearing mention of the “Hydroponics Lab”, and not really putting it together what that meant. In truth, I thought this really is just some Sci-fi thingamajig. Nonetheless, it didn’t come out as I was expecting to be, it was just like several things in science fiction. Hydroponics actually is present in real life. How will you grow plants with no soil? You will need a lot…
We use ladybugs to keep the aphids at bay instead of pesticides. But the ladybugs would rather hang out in the pipes.
